  • FAQ/Common Issues
  •   Alocasia Silver Dragon (Alocasia baginda 'Silver Dragon') is a rare jewel alocasia native to the limestone forests of Borneo, where it grows on the forest floor beneath a dense canopy. It belongs to the Araceae family and is one of the most sought-after collector plants in the alocasia baginda group.

The leaves are thick, slightly puckered, and covered in a silvery-grey overlay that sits on top of a pale sage-green base, with dark green veins pressed deep into the surface. Each leaf is broadly heart-shaped and held upright on a pale, speckled petiole. 'Silver Dragon' stays compact, typically reaching 12 to 24 inches tall indoors, with each new leaf emerging slightly larger than the last.

As a rare tropical plant grown primarily for its foliage, 'Silver Dragon' puts most of its energy into producing new leaves rather than blooms. It can produce a spathe-and-spadix flower typical of the Araceae family, but this happens infrequently indoors and the blooms are small and not fragrant. It also filters indoor air and has been shown to remove formaldehyde and other toxins from the surrounding environment.

'Silver Dragon' is sensitive to being moved and may drop a leaf or two while adjusting to a new spot, so choose its location carefully. It does well near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays higher, and it thrives in a terrarium setup where humidity can be controlled. Keep it on a high shelf or in a spot out of reach, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation, and cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. It is best placed away from small children as well.

  •   Alocasia Silver Dragon grows well in bright indirect light, such as near a north- or east-facing window, or set back from a bright west-facing one.

Water it every 7 to 10 days during the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry before watering again; it wilts slightly when dry.

'Silver Dragon' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to prevent soggy roots.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heater drafts.

'Silver Dragon' is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, coastal California, southern Texas, and Louisiana. It can move outside for summer in warmer parts of the country, but it needs cover from rain and shelter from direct downpours.
  • Q: How much humidity does Alocasia Silver Dragon need to thrive indoors?
A: It needs humidity above 60 percent. A pebble tray with water, a small humidifier nearby, or placement in a terrarium all help maintain that level consistently.

Q: Does this plant do well under office lighting?
A: Alocasia Silver Dragon can grow under bright LED office lighting if the fixture is close enough to provide strong indirect light. Growth will be slower than near a window, but it stays healthy.

Q: Is 'Silver Dragon' safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap also causes skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: How do I know when this plant needs water?
A: 'Silver Dragon' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil rather than relying on a set schedule, since humidity, pot size, and season all affect how quickly it dries out.

Q: Why is 'Silver Dragon' dropping leaves after I brought it home?
A: It is sensitive to being moved and commonly drops one or two leaves while adjusting to a new environment. Keep conditions stable, avoid repositioning it again, and new growth should resume within a few weeks.

Q: What window direction works best for this plant indoors?
A: A north- or east-facing window works well. 'Silver Dragon' scorches in a south-facing window, so if that is the only option, move it several feet back from the glass or use a sheer curtain to filter the light.
