Asclepias tuberosa, tray of 50 plugs

For a pop of bright orange that will enliven sunny summer borders, look to our native Butterfly Weed, Asclepias tuberosa. Its small, curiously shaped blooms also reward close inspection. They appear in dense clusters and are irresistible to butterflies, which help pollinate the flowers. Slim, decorative pods form later, filled with papery seeds attached to silky parachutes. As garden companions, we suggest Festuca glauca for its steely blue clumps of foliage, Gaillardia for the color echo of its Daisy-like blooms, and Salvia for its spires of contrasting purple flowers.
