Bare Root Father Abraham Apple Tree (Malus cv.)

Deciduous, medium-sized fruit tree.
Description: Greenish-yellow skin almost totally flushed with brownish red and dotted over the surface; yellowish-white flesh is fine-grained, tinged red under the skin with a sweet, mildly aromatic flavor; stores well.
Habit: Grafted onto semi-dwarfing rootstock (MM111); grows 12 to 15' high; space trees 15-20' apart; late-season blooming period.
Culture: Prefers moderately rich soils and full sun; requires one additional pollinator (apple variety) for improved fruit production and fruit shape.
Hardiness: Cold hardy to USDA Zone 4.

Heirloom apple authority Tom Burford believes "Father Abraham" may be identical to the old German apple Danziger Kantapfel, first mentioned in 1790 and brought to Virginia by early German settlers. It was also grown extensively in North Carolina, Kentucky, and even Illinois, and its fruit was prized as an excellent winter keeper and useful for cider. This apple ripens in late October or November and will keep through April or May.

This tree will ship bare root. One year grafted M111 is approximately 4-5' tall.

Bare root planting tips:

~ If you can't plant immediately, store your plant in a cool location and keep the roots moist or pot in a container with a nursery potting mix from your local garden center.
~ Before planting, let the roots soak for several hours as you prepare the site. You'll want to dig a large enough hole so the root mass can spread out and the plant is at the same soil level as when it was growing in the nursery.
~ Once planted, water it in well and wait a month before fertilizing. Mulching will help to maintain moisture and raise soil temperatures for faster growth.
