The most popular heirloom okra, this variety was developed by Clemson University in South Carolina and won the 1939 All-America Selections. Okra is native to northern & western Africa and was brought to the American South by enslaved African people as early as the 16th century, becoming a Southern dietary staple. Pods are smooth, tender, and easy to cook with in a wide variety of dishes including soups, stews, pickled okra and fried okra. The flowers are also edible! Grows to about 5 feet tall with abundant fruit production.
Planting Instructions: Sow Clemson Spineless Okra seeds directly in the ground after all danger of frost passes and soil has warmed to 70°F, in late spring or early summer. Plant 1/2" deep, spaced 12" apart. Remove pods with trimmers or knife when they grow to 3-4" long, to keep plants productive.
Seed Saving Instructions: Allow choice Clemson Spineless Okra pods to brown and dry out fully. Remove pods from plants and split pods open to remove seeds. If an early frost arrives, plants may be cut at their base and taken indoors to finish seed production. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
