Raspberry - Willamette

Willamette Raspberry is supplied as one live potted plant. This vigorous, summer-bearing red raspberry produces medium-size, dark-red berries with very good flavor and a soft texture traditionally valued for jam, freezing, baking, and fresh use. The cultivar develops long canes and renews its planting through new shoots, so it performs best where there is room for a supported berry row.

Transplant Willamette into full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid locations that stay wet after rain or irrigation because saturated conditions can damage raspberry roots. Water the pot thoroughly before planting, loosen only congested outer roots, and set the crown at the same height it occupied in the nursery container. Irrigate deeply during the first season and keep moisture consistent as fruit develops. Mulch helps limit weeds and moisture swings when placed around, rather than directly against, the crown.

Plan a trellis, fence, or horizontal wire system before vigorous canes begin to arch. Willamette produces berries on second-year floricanes. When the summer harvest is complete, remove the canes that carried fruit at ground level and keep the strongest first-year primocanes for next year. During dormancy, thin weak or damaged growth and space the retained canes so light and air can enter the row. Tie them loosely to the support to simplify harvesting and reduce cane breakage.

Willamette is self-fruitful and does not need a named pollinizer partner, although abundant bee visits can support well-formed berries.
