Stevia, scientifically known as *Stevia rebaudiana*, is a tender perennial herb native to the subtropical regions of Brazil and Paraguay. Belonging to the Asteraceae family, it features elongated, slightly serrated green leaves on weak, branching stems. The plant typically reaches a mature height and spread of 1 to 2 feet (sometimes up to 3 feet in ideal warm conditions), forming a small, bushy shrub. It produces small white flowers with purple accents and thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, moist, slightly acidic soil.

Stevia is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11 as a perennial, though often grown as an annual in cooler climates where it cannot survive frost. Its primary use is as a natural, zero-calorie sweetener; the leaves contain steviol glycosides (like stevioside and rebaudioside A) that are 200–400 times sweeter than sugar. Dried leaves or extracts serve as a sugar substitute in beverages, foods, and for people managing diabetes or weight. Traditionally, it has also been used in herbal medicine for potential benefits like blood sugar regulation and antioxidant effects.
